Summary of the pastime: SB 9.21: King Rantideva and his family fasted for a very long time. When they were finally ready to break the fast they were interrupted in succession by uninvited guests. In spite of his severe thirst and hunger, the king fulfilled the requests of the guests respectfully and without any hesitation. Resultantly, the king was at the verge of his death due to his generosity and kindness but these were the stringent tests by various Demigods that he passed with flying colours.

Benediction for hearing the pastime: All those who followed the principles of King Rantideva were totally favoured by his mercy and became pure devotees, attached to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Narayana. Thus they all became the best of yogis.

The life of Rantideva is a practical demonstration of the following verse:
Bhagavad-gita 5.18:

vidya-vinaya-sampanne
brahmane gavi hastini
suni caiva sva-pake ca
panditah sama-darsinah

The humble sages, by virtue of true knowledge, see with equal vision a learned and gentle brahmana, a cow, an elephant, a dog and a dog-eater [outcaste].
