HH Gopal Krishna Maharaj will be visiting ISKCON Scarborough on 27th July 2010- Tuesday at 6.30pm


We are extremely pleased to announce that HH Gopal Krishna Maharaj will be visiting ISKCON Scarborough on 27th July 2010- Tuesday at 6.30pm


Gopal Krishna Maharaj was born on the auspicious day of Ekadasi on August 14, 1944 in New Delhi. After graduating from the University of Delhi, he studied Business Management at the Sorbonne University of Paris on a scholarship from the French Government, and later studied for a Masters Degree in Business Administration from McGill University in Montreal.. After finishing his education, he worked as a marketing research analyst for Pepsi Cola and Bristol-Myers.


Maharaj was living in Toronto when he first met with Srila Prabhupada in June 1968. Within two weeks of meeting him, Maharaj decided to accept Srila Prabhupada as his spiritual master. In May 1969 he was initiated as one of Srila Prabhupada's disciples. During a three month period where Prabhupada stayed in Montreal, Maharaj regularly heard from him on devotional topics and took instruction regarding his own personal life.


On Srila Prabhupada's instruction Maharaj continued working for Bristol-Myers while he lived in the temple. Maharaj served as Srila Prabhupada's secretary for several years. In 1975, Srila Prabhupada sent Maharaj to India, giving him the responsibility of Governing Body Commissioner (GBC) for India. Prabhupada also instructed him specifically to print and expand the distribution of his books in India and to translate and print books in Indian languages.


In 1976, Prabhupada appointed Maharaj GBC for the Soviet Union (USSR). Maharaj made several trips to the USSR to preach and publish the Bhagavad-Gita in Russian.


Srila Prabhupada appointed Maharaj trustee of several charitable trusts such as the Vrindavan Mayapur Trust and the the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust (BBT) International.


In 1981 Maharaj took sannyasa and in 1982 begun accepting disciples. Since then Maharaj has been traveling extensively all over the world preaching, initiating disciples, delivering talks, and overseeing devotional projects.


Currently Maharaj is the GBC of many regions of the world such as Vrindavan, Delhi, Mumbai, Mayapur, & other parts of India, parts of Africa, parts of the Commonwealth of Independient States and most of Canada.


Maharaj played a leading role in inspiring and completing several large ISKCON temples, such asthe Glory os India temple in New Delhi (inaugurated by then Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee) and the Radha-Bankebihari temple in Nairobi.


Maharaj has been featured on Radio, Television and Newspaper stories in India and abroad commenting on various issues. He has delivered lectures to diverse audiences ranging from the Chamber of Commerce in Mumbai, IIT students in Delhi, and from congregation householder ISKCON devotees to academics, politicians and interfaith communities.
