Sri Krsna Janmastami
The auspicious day of the appearance of Lord Krsna is celebrated all over the world as Sri Krsna Janmastami. It is celebrated on the eighth day of the Krsna Paksha (waning moon) of the month of Shravana. Krsna, who is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, appeared in Mathura as the son of Vasudeva and Devaki.

In Bhagavad Gita 4.8, Lord Krsna teaches the reason to his descend:

paritranaya sadhunam
vinasaya ca duskrtam
dharma-samsthapanarthaya
sambhavami yuge yuge

To deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants, as well as to reestablish the principles of religion, I Myself appear millennium after millennium.


In Bhagavad Gita 4.9, Lord Krsna teaches us how to get out of this wheel of misery

janma karma ca me divyam
evam yo vetti tattvatah
tyaktva deham punar janma
naiti mam eti so 'rjuna

One who knows the transcendental nature of My appearance and activities does not, upon leaving the body, take his birth again in this material world, but attains My eternal abode, O Arjuna.

The Appearance day of Srila Prabhupada 

In 1896, on the day following Janmastami, His Divine Grace, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada was born in Calcutta, India. In the Vaishnava calendar, this day is also known as Nandotsava: the day that Nanda Maharaja, Krishna’s father, prepared a grand festival to celebrate the birth of his son.

As founder-Acarya of ISKCON, Srila Prabhupada plays a central role in the life of all ISKCON devotees. Everyone connected to ISKCON knows that without Srila Prabhupada’s courage and his unmotivated love and compassion to all the residents of the world, we would not have had the opportunity to intimately serve Lord Krishna.

Gaura Purnima - Celebrate the appearance day of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu with us on Sunday, March 24th

We welcome everyone to celebrate the appearance day of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in Iskcon Scarborough on Sunday March 24th between 10.30 am to 1 pm ET.

Gaura Purnima is the celebration of the most auspicious and adorable advent of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu – The Golden Avatar.

The Supreme Lord Sri Krishna appeared as Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to establish Sankirtana Movement – the yuga dharma for this age of Kali. He appeared on the full moon day in the month of Phalguna in the year 1486 AD at Sridham Mayapura as the son of Sri Jagannath Mishra and Srimati Sachidevi.

In the revealed scriptures Lord Krishna was predicted to appear as Golden Avatar (incarnation) as Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to propound and propagate the congregational chanting of Holy name of the Lord “ Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare / Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare “ in order to counteract the contaminating influence of this debilitating and despicable age of quarrel and hypocrisy and attain the spiritual perfection.

ISKCON Scarborough - The Holy month of Damodar is from October 29th -November 26th

The holiest month of Kartik or Damodar is from October 29th -November 26th this year. It is a great opportunity, for new and seasoned bhakti practitioners alike, to dive a little deeper into their spiritual practices. As per Vedic texts, any devotional activity done during this month has its benefits multiplied a thousand-fold.

During this month we offer special prayers to Lord Krishna in the form of Damodar where he is bound by his mother's love. During this month we recite special prayers known as the Damodarastakam. The lyrics and English translation of the Damodarastakam prayers can be found here: https://www.krishna.com/damodarastakam Traditionally lamps are offered while singing these prayers, devotees are encouraged to take up this practice daily in their homes as well. The procedure for offering lamps is available in the diagram below. Devotees can also host home programs to share this divine experience with their friends, families, and coworkers. If you are interested in hosting one please visit the temple on a Sunday and speak to Dhira Nitai prabhu. Several festivals also fall within this auspicious month including the Appearance of Radha Kunda, Diwali, Govardhana Puja, and the disappearance anniversary of Srila Prabhupada. There will be several stage performances as well as tents in the park where attendees can get their face painted beautifully, apply henna to their hands/palms and there will also be several cookbooks & ancient Vedic texts.

The highlight of the event is the distribution of free vegetarian feast/free water for everyone throughout the day starting at 11 am.

Several dignitaries will be taking part in this annual event.

The parade starts inside the Milliken Park at 11 am and the VIP introduction/ inauguration is scheduled to take place at 12 noon.

“As stated in the Bhagavad-gita, the Lord says that His appearance, birth, and activities, are all transcendental, and one who understands them factually becomes immediately eligible to be transferred to the spiritual world. “ –Chapter 3: Birth of Lord Krishna, Krishna Book by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.

Lord Krishna Himself in Bhagavad gita, Chapter 4 text 8 describes the reason of His appearance as follows:

paritrāṇāya sādhūnāḿ

sambhavāmi yugeyuge

Srila Prabhupada’s Vyasa-puja

Vyasa-puja means “worship of Vyasa,” Vyasa being the compiler of the Vedic scriptures and thus the original spiritual master.

Devotees honor Srila Prabhupada - our Param Guru on the spiritual master’s appearance day (a respectful term for “birthday”) because he authentically transmits the teachings of Vyasa.

Although ISKCON has many spiritual masters, or acaryas, Srila Prabhupada, the founder-Acharya, holds a permanent position of special esteem. So just as when he was physically present (1965 through 1977), each year devotees gather on his appearance day to praise him and recall his glories.

A disciple of Srila Prabhupada, Dravida dasa joined ISKCON in 1973 and has served as an editor and proof-reader for the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust for over 45 years. From 1983 to 1989 he was part of the team that completed Srila Prabhupada’s magnum opus: a commentated English translation of India's jewel of Vedic wisdom, the 18,000-verse Srimad Bhagavatam (Bhagavata Purana). He also helped produce the revised editions of Srila Prabhupada’s Isopanisad, Krsna Book, Caitanya-Caritamrta, and Teachings of Lord Caitanya, and he is part of the team that produces Srila Prabhupada’s Vyasa-puja book every year. In addition to his editing work, he teaches Bhakti Yoga classes at ISKCON’s San Diego temple and other centres in North America.

Throughout all this immersion in transcendental literature, Dravida Dasa developed a love of the Sanskrit language, and especially the elaborate verses of the Bhagavatam and other works of bhakti literature.

His devotion and expertise in chanting form a marvellous combination. He has a been Brahmacari throughout his devotional career.

Please note devotees fast until moonrise on Thursday

5 am to 9 am: Mangala Arti, Tulasi Puja, Guru Puja, Chanting, Class, Main Arti

6 pm to 9 pm: Abhishek on Gaura-NItai Deities,  Kirtan, Class, Main Arti and a vegetarian feast

Temple opening:

From Mar 20th, 2022 (Sunday), the temple will be opening the doors every Sunday from 10.30 am onwards until 1 pm. The regular programs like in-person classes will start from Mar 20th 2022 onwards.

Devotees are required to follow all the mandatory COVID protocols when they visit the temple.

We will be constantly monitoring the evolving COVID protocols and make changes as required.
